Green Community Connections

Green Community Connections is a deep-roots organization devoted to creating a sustainable future in the Oak Park and River Forest, Illinois area.  We work together to build a resilient, environmentally sustainable community locally, and we strive to be an environmental leader in the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

Our mission is to develop a deeper understanding of natural systems, build community, and inspire change that promotes sustainability at the family, organizational and public policy levels.

Our Initiatives

One Earth Film Festival

In 2014 Green Community Connections will host the third annual One Earth Film Festival in Chicago, Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Berwyn & River Grove, March 7-9.  One Earth Film Festival is a Chicago area film festival that aims to create opportunities for understanding climate change, sustainability and the power of human involvement through sustainability-themed films and facilitated discussion.  The film festival is part of the community and the community part of the film festival.  We engage private, public and non-profit sector community partners in the sponsorship and production of the film festival.  The 2013 festival drew 2000 from throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

One Earth...Our Earth! Young Filmmakers Contest

In conjunction with the 2014 film festival, Green Community Connections is sponsoring the second annual Young Filmmakers Contest.  The contest is open to students from grades 3 through college level and has been created with the goal of engaging the youth in the discussion about sustainability issues and getting them thinking about solutions.  Each winning filmmaker will receive a cash prize and matching grant of equal value to be given to a non-profit organization chosen by the filmmaker.  Winning films will be featured at One Earth Film Festival March 7-9, 2014.

The Green Living & Learning Tour is a great opportunity for Oak Park and River Forest residents to share what they are doing to make their lives more sustainable with innovative green initiatives.  Participants see first hand practical, everyday ways to apply ecological principles, and they can ask questions of knowledgeable resource persons and homeowners.  The 2013 tour takes place September 28, 2013.
